VERDI, Giuseppe - ALS 1 p in Italian no date.."If there are other letters for me at the post office, send them to me
immediately in an envelope to Torino, with the address: Signor Cavalier Giuseppe Verdi, Deputy Torino". This is from the
period when Verdi was very active in the politics of the newly united Italy and took pleasure in his title. Fine full
signature
VERDI, Giuseppe- 3 pp in French to the French composer Ernest Reyer (composer of Sigurd and Salammbo) containing musical
quote (very beautiful, very beautiful) in Verdi's hand from Reyer's opera Salammbo. Reyer had attended and reviewed the world
premiere of Aida in Cairo and the two had been on good terms over the years. "Busseto S Agata 25 Mai 1896 Mon cher M. Reyer..I
am very guilty!!I should have thanked you long ago for the score of Salammbo which you had the kindness to send me with M.
Duloche. I must ask you to forgive me for the long silence.....but I always find excuses useless and prefer to say frankly
mea culpa, mea culpa in the hope that you will excuse me.! You have given the musical world much with Sigurd and now in your
last work there is even more warmth especially in the play between Salammbo and Malhe. It is useless to speak of what
everybody admires, the true and just accent you give to the word and phrase, merits too uncommon nowadays. The beauties of
harmony and modern orchestration have an irresistible fascination -one succumbs and forgets the rest (Musical quote from ...
qui me donnera......tres beau tres beau) I would love to hear Salammbo in performance to appreciate the scenic beauties and
orchestration which I imagine so well from the piano reduction. Please accept dear M .Reyer my most sincere compliments and
thanks, devotedly G, Verdi P.S. Close your eyes to my terrible French! I always hesitate writing in this language especially
to a literary man like you" GREAT LETTER. especially coming at this late period in Verdi's life. It is an example that
contradicts the following item!!
