186. COTOGNI, Antonio- Russian cabinet photo of the LEGENDARY 19th century baritone who enjoyed a great international career from 1852-1898. He had an enormous repertory and created many operas as well as doing first performances of many operas in many major theatres. He enjoyed a long association with the Imperial Opera in St Petersburg and gave his farewell there in 1898 in "Don Pasquale"- a great teacher he was associated with the Conservatory in St. Petersburg and this photo is dedicated and signed on the verso in Italian "To my dearest friend Professor Emile Berbeck A Cotogni Pietroburgo 15/27 Gennero 1884"- After his retirement he was a professor at Santa Cecilia Roma. DORUS-GRAS, Julie- ALS 2 pp back to back from the important French soprano who finished her studies with Bordogni & Paer, debuting in Brussels in 1830 in "La Muette de Portici" moving directly on to Paris where she created Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable" in 1831 opposite Cinti-Damoreau (whose successor she became after her retirement in 1835) & Nourrit and then in 1886 Marguerite de Valois in "Les Huguenots" opposite Falcon, Nourrit & Lavasseur. In between (1835) she created Eudoxie in Halevy's "La Juive" opposite Falcon, Lavasseur & Nourrit and afterwards (1838) Teresa in Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" and Paolina in Donizetti's "Les Martyrs" in 1840 and these are only her more well known creations. She also sang many first performances of these opera in London and elsewhere. She retired from the Paris Opera in 1845 because of the intrigues of Rosine Stolz mistress of director Pillet. She returned to concertize in 1850 and taught in Paris. She married M.Gras first violin of the Paris Opera in 1833. A truly IMPORTANT singer. SCARCE.

Daughter of a French dancer engaged in Berlin she was trained as a dancer but Gretry heard her voice and had her study with Marie Favart, Gretry then composed an aria for her to sing at age 14 in the world premiere of his opera "Lucile" in 1769! Taking the nom de plume of her husband-Dugazon- a publisher and singing teacher she went on the a GREAT career at the Comedie Italienne & Opera Comique where she sang over 60 operas creating a great many of them. One of her greatest triumphs was Boieldieu's "Le Calife de Baghdad" which also served as her farewell in 1804. Her name came to be associated with vocal type the "Sopran Dugazon"- VERY SCARCE.

Her short 6 year career started in 1832 at the Paris Opera in Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable" She created operas by Auber, Cherubini and others but most important Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots" and Halevy's "La Juive" both together with Dorus-Gras and Nourrit. In 1837 she sang for Louis Philippe at the reopening of the Theatre of Versailles together with Duprez. She lost her voice and stopped in 1838. Her names has been given to a vocal category in France- "Sopran Falcon" the great dramatic soprano voice.. In this letter to "My Dear Director" she says that she arrived yesterday evening and is ready to rehearse when he sees fit....etc my best regards to you Cornelie Falcon." He became one of the favorite singers of Louis XV! and Marie Antoinette specializing in the operas of Gluck which he did not ornament as he did other composers's works. They paid him double fees! At the start of the revolution he fled to Hamburg and London returning to Paris afterwards retiring from the theatre in 1800 at 38 but still singing in private concerts for many years afterwards. He was a most sought after and successful teacher pupils being Louis Nourrit (Adolphe's father), Ponchard, Lavasseur, Branchu and Mlle.Duchamp who he married in 1817. Noted Spanish tenor Isidoro Fagoaga wrote a Spanish language biography "Pedro Garat El Orfeo de Francia". This letter was written shortly after his return to Paris after the revolution concerns his teaching plans He writes.... "Citizens, The reasons which have impeded my activity in the office which I should fill, Professor of Singing, having ceased to exist, I have the honor to advise you that I am at the disposition of the Conservatoire. Should this not inconvenience you, I would propose to take up my duties on the twenty-first nivose (December-January), Greetings and regards, Garat Paris the 23 frimaire, ninth year". 213. JOACHIM, Amalie- ALS 4 pp in German from the mezzo soprano wife of the great violinist/conductor Joseph Joachim. Their bethrothal was celebrated with a performance of "Orpheus" which he conducted and she sang the title role. She gave up a successful stage career for domestic life and motherhood but continued her outstanding career as a lieder singer especially favoring Schumann and Brahms who dedicated many songs to her and creating "Zigeunerlieder" in 1888. After their divorce in 1874 called a "tragic misunderstanding" as Joachim was convinced she was having an affair with Brahms's publisher Simrock which Brahms said was not true which cooled the relationship between Brahms and Joachim for many years. Joachim taught both in the USA and Germany The letter written in "Hamburg 31.13.94 to "my Dear lady" to a singer congratulating her on her performance and saying that her daughter (Marie Joachim ) must hear her in Berlin. 261. WALKER, Edyth- SPc of the Hopewell New York born mezzo then soprano who studied with von Orgeni, Eichenberger, von Schreiner and Marianne Brandt. She debuted as Fides in Berlin 1893 and by 1895 was engaged in Vienna debuting in the same role and by 1901 was singing Donna Elvira in Salzburg .In 1903 she and Mahler had a disagreement and her contract with Vienna was broken. In 1903 she came to the Met debuting as Amneris but singing Wagner soprano parts. She subsequently returned to Germany singing in all the major theatres as well as Covent Garden where she was a big success. She created Strauss's Elektra in the London premiere. She eventually retired to Paris and was a teacher at the American Conservatory at Fountainebleau. She later returned to the US in 1936 and counted among her students Blanche Thebom & Irene Dalis. She recorded Olympia's Aria and Manon's Gavotte. Uncommon.
