193. GRANDI, Margherita- SPc portrait of the Tasmania born dramatic soprano. Grandi had a very unorthodox career coming to London in 1911 at 17 and studying there at the Royal College of Music till 1917 before going to Paris for study with Emma Calve! She took an anagram of Calve's name and sang as a lyric mezzo soprano as Emma Vecla (NOT to be confused with the operetta singer of the same name!) creating Massenet's "Amadis" in 1922 at Monte Carlo. She then married Giovanni Grandi a noted Italian stage designer and reworked her voice with Giannina Russ becoming a dramatic soprano. After having a daughter in 1928 she re emerged in 1932 as Margherita Grandi at Milano's Teatro Carcano arriving 2 years later at La Scala as Elena in "Mefistofole" subsequently singing all the big dramatic Italian roles in Italy & South America even giving the Italian premiere of Strauss's "Friedenstag" in Venice 1940. What Grandi ultimately would be most remembered for happened in 1939 when she sang Verdi's "Macbeth" at the Glyndebourne Festival under Fritz Busch causing a sensation. She returned after WWII to repeat the role there and a broadcast of the now LEGENDARY performances have just come out on a Testament CD together with arias from "Il Trovatore" & "Don Carlo"(Not to be missed). Her post war career continued in Italy( La Gioconda at La Scala & Aida at the first post war Verona Festival etc & England where she sang Tosca, Donna Anna & Senta etc. and lasted till 1951- she created Bliss's "The Olympians" at Covent Garden too AND recorded Giulietta under Beecham for the "Tales of Hofmann" sound track. AN EXCEPTIONAL ARTIST WITH A TRULY UNUSUAL career and EXTREMELY SCARCE AUITOGRAPH.

218. NESHDANOVA, Antonina- SPc of the GREAT Russian soprano trained by Mazzetti in Moscow who she later married! She debut 1903 at the Bolshoi in "Iwan Sussanin" and in a very short time was the leading prima donna. She seldom sang out of Russia but did appear opposite Caruso & Ruffo in Rigoletto in Paris 1912. She remained in Russia after the revolution and sang at the Bolshoi till 1930 later becoming active on the radio and as teacher. Here vast repertory embraced all the great Russia, French and Italian coloratura roles as well as heavier ones such as Tosca, Elsa, Desdemona and Tatiana. STUPENDOUS recordings. Late in her career she made recordings with her then husband the great conductor Golovanov. Neshdanova was without question one of Russia's very greatest singers. RARE.
