LEHMANN, Lilli- ALS 2 pp February 5,1919 a FASCINATING letter from the great soprano giving her opinions on Jews. Addressed to
Mr. Bechret- the great soprano writes"Usually Wagner wrote down most music without having to make any corrections. The
score of "The Zauberfloete" ("Magic Flute") which is displayed here in the Royal Library, consists of thousands of measures,
of which not a single one is crossed out or requires corrections. I have just donated my 25 Wagner letters to our local Royal
Library and am in the process of sorting through letters of other notables to donate as well, so that everything is in order
in the event of my death, of which I think every day. It appears that with Wagner it is not a "contempt" of Jews, but rather
that many of them landed important positions through money and different means, for which they were less suited than other
races. People say easily: "typically Jewish, only a Jew could do such and such, etc, etc," but I assure you that I often say
if a Jew had done something, people would say "only a Jew would do this" - People are all alike. Jews are very gifted,
hard-working and very bright. Of course certain identity marks stick to the race due to incest and antiquated religious
practices. However, by now they are mixed with the European race. Of course they could add just as much to the improvement
of their looks and their health as Christians. In my eyes, they are their own worst enemies. I know so many dear, faithful
and gentle families and some of the finest among them "mauscheln" (=Jewish sing-song, accompanied by hand gestures) Is that
necessary? I don't like them any the less, but it would be nice if they were to talk like everyone else. By the way if you
want to read something beautiful about the Jewish people, their oldest songs and poems, read Herder's Hebrew Poetry" and its
previous volume, which contains a dialogue about this. This work, both volumes, gave me very great pleasure. Reading them
made me cheerful and happy...". Quite an exceptional letter coming from this seeming termagant who previously only seemed to
have kind words about birds and animals-no feather fans or fur coats!! ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE!
