73. GODOWSKY, Leopold- SPc of the famed piano virtuoso, composer & teacher (Heinrich Neuhaus was a pupil). His 53 studies on a Chopin's Etudes is his most famous composition. Busoni claimed that he and Godowsky were the only people to have added anything to keyboard writing since Liszt! A noted teacher Godowsky was the first pianist to teach the principle of weight release as distinct from purely muscular momentum.. He constantly toured the world and made many recordings. His son Leopold Jr was the co-inventor (with Leopold Mannes) of Kodachrome photo transparency film, as well as a violinist. Leopold Jr. married Gershwin's younger sister Frances. Uncommon this early.

103. PESSL, Yella- igned program for a harpsichord recital given by the noted pianist/harpsichordist, organist Jan 29, 1944. The Austrian-born American artist immigrated to the USA in 1931 known for her interpretations of Bach, Yella Pessl was an active performer for more than half a century. As founder and director of the Bach Circle, a New York group specializing in lesser-known works of Bach and other Baroque composers, she helped introduce 18th-century music to a wide audience in the USA where she toured extensively, playing solo recitals and with orchestras under conductors like Toscanini & Walter. In 1938 she accompanied the Trapp Family Singers, whom she had known in Vienna, at their Town Hall debut. She had her own radio program on WQXR, made recordings for the RCA Victor label and was on the faculty of Columbia University. Uncommon.
