Bull was just as famous for his scheme of resettling Norwegians in the US and his grandiose scheme at New Norway Pennsylvania. He was a larger than life character and a great showman on the level of Paganini according to Robert Schumann.

He studied with parents and then at Princeton debuting under Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1947. He actively concertized as well taught at the American Conservatory at Fountainbleu. He played Mozart's Concertos for 2 and 3 pianos with his parents and recorded them under Szell and Ormandy. He was killed in a car accident in Canada in 1972 at age 45. His father died the same year. Born in Frankfurt to a diplomatic family Francois was a prodigy and was studying with Mascagni at age 6!Later on he studied at various times with Cortot, Long and Boulanger. Chopin, Debussy, Ravel and Schumann were central to his repertory and he has left many recordings. He was a big jazz fan and always claimed that jazz influenced his playing. He led an extravagant life-night life, drugs, drink and he had a heart attack while playing in 1968 dying in 1970 at age 46. His son with Josette Bahvsar Maximilien wrote a biography of his father published in 2002. Also signed by Raphael Genin. SCARCE.

Gawrilow won the Tchaikowsky competition in 1974 at age 18 and substituted that same year at Salzburg for Richter and began enjoying a spectacular success with world wide appearances and recordings. He was able to settle in the west without suffering penalties in the USSR. After a 6 year absence from 1994-2000 he resumed his career.

78. LEV, Ray- SP 8 x 10" photo of the Russian born American pianist d/s to Columbian musicologist Otto de Greiff. Lev came to the USA at the age of one year. She won the American Matthay prize and studied with Tobias Matthay in England debuting at 17 under Sir Landon Ronald in Tchaikowsky's Piano Concerto #1 in 1929. She returned to the US in 1934 for her New York debut and pursued her career both here and in Europe playing much modern music as well as the classics. During the war she played for the troops & FDR as well as giving 2 command performances in London. In 1948 she joined 31 other American artists in a letter of solidarity with 12 Russian writers who called on fellow communists to declare themselves publicly and thereby became the only classical musician to be named in the Red Channels list. This all put a dead stop to her career though she gave almost annual Carnegie Hall recitals and made other appearances. She made recordings some of which have appeared on CD. UNCOMMON.

He was a pupil of Philipp, praised by Ravel and took composition lessons from Prokofieff. A Romantic he excelled in Chopin and loved playing his complete works in different cities. He took over Lipatti's Geneva master classes at the Geneva Conservatory, played duo recitals with Szigeti and married his daughter. A latter day project were recitals of Polish music with Polish/Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer, some on CD.

SANROMA, Jesus Maria- SP 8 x 10" portrait of the very fine Puerto Rican pianist trained at the New England Conservatory of Music by Szumowska he became the official pianist of the BSO playing a vast repertory under all the leading conductors. He took a break for work with Cortot & Schnabel in Europe where he also concertized. He played under Prokofieff and Stravinsky and gave first American performances of works by Bloch, Dukelsy, Honneger, Ravel, Martinu and others as well as recording Rhapsody in Blue under Fiedler. He struck up a friendship with Hindemith when he came to the US in 1937 and he gave first performances of his piano sonata and concerto as well as a Sonata for Piano Duet which they recorded together. After WW11 Sanroma was appointed head of the piano department at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and he moved back to PR but kept an active schedule of performances and recordings working with Casals, Bernstein and many others. He is considered to be one of the most accomplished well rounded pianists of the 20th century.

Martin Krause also a Liszt pupil claimed that Sauer was "the legitimate heir of Liszt: he has more of his charm and geniality than any other Liszt pupil".Prior to his time with Liszt he had studied with Nicholas Rubinstein. The virtuoso had a very long career touring until 1936 when he was 74. He was an active teacher and his pupils included Askanese, Goldsand, Hilsberg, Jonas, Ney, Ahlgrim among others. There are recordings of his elegant playing.

He held this post till 1937 when he switched over to the Vienna Philharmonic where he remained till 1951. All the while he kept up his career as a recording and solo artist and chamber music player notably with Fischer & Mainardi. He was a prolific recording artist having done all 10 Beethoven Violin Sonatas with Kempff as early as 1952. He founded the Lucerne Strings and taught in Salzburg, Vienna and ucerne.
