BUSTABO, Guila- SP 7 x 9" action photo(trimmed borders) d/s to conductor Bernhard Conz "To Mr Conz with enthusiastic remembrance of the Brahms Dec 7th 1956" by the American violin prodigy whose career was ruined by WW11 when she remained in Europe after being arrested in Paris as a Nazi sympathizer because she had played under Mengelberg and remained in Europe during the war. Wisconsin born, the beautiful girl was trained by Sametini & Persinger and made her Carnegie Hall debut at 25 in 1931 and subsequently took Europe by storm. Even the Guaneri del Gesu violin she played had political implications having been given her by Lady Ravensdale, sister in law of Sir Oswald Mosley leader of the British Union of Fascists, an un-fortunate misfortune as it turned out afterwards! After the war she continued playing in Europe but eventually devoted herself to teaching. Signed photos of Bustabo are exceedingly rare. There is some minor loss of ink darkness to several letters.
