Schaarwachter Berlin sepia cabinet photo of the LEGENDARY 19th century violinist- a child prodigy he appeared in at the age of 12 (1843) in Leipzig in a concert with Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn followed by an appearance under Mendelssohn with the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra!! His career as soloist, concertmaster with various orchestras flourished. He befriended Brahms who wrote a violin sonata for him. After an estrangement with Brahms brought about by his divorce from Amalie & Brahms testimony on her behalf Brahms wrote the sublime Double Concerto for him. Dvorak, Gade & Schumann also wrote large scale concerti for him. He organized the famed Joachim Quartet and composed virtuosic violin pieces. He settled in Berlin and taught Hubay, Auer, Powell and Hubermann among others.
