114. RICCI, Ruggero- 4 pp handwritten document on board a Lufthansa flight!! An interesting description of the different styles of violin playing as viewed by Ricci.. "Old Russian School....The old Russians did whatever sounded more attractive-a lot of glissandi beautifully done. They took advantage of what one could do between the notes, elegance and polish. One could say a set of very effective clichés. In any case they were the originators of the most imitated style in string playing. An enormous impact that has left it's influence on all string players....New Russian School...Schmaltzy- much more romanticized, slower tempi-an excess of vibrato exaggerated rubati. A gushing accordion like low stroke with holes in the legato. Long notes have too much vibrato and passing notes are white in sound. Despite it's faults it is a very successful formulas that is universally accepted. People love sugar and sentimentality. We sell corn to the Russians and they sell it back to us." "German School Much more measured playing, black colors, clarity. Lean sound. Rather a harpsichord approach. Not a style suited for strings. Spontaneity is verboten. Everything must be Korrect [sic]". " Franco Belgian School -A grand manner approach that tries to make the violin into a bigger medium. Ysaye was their exponent. Virtuosity with a master concept. Painting with bigger strokes. An overall building of sonority. More leg sweep than direct attack. An exalted poetic concept rather than sentimental. Anyway this is how they want to play. You can't knock good intentions. They all have their style but style is a necessary evil Ruggero Ricci Dec 4, 1975" -FASCINATING.
