249. KLEIBER, Carlos- TLS 12/12/96: "Dear Mr. Shure, (Please excuse my erratic typing) I was very touched by your letter. Mainly, I mean, the part about your mother. It made me terribly sad to think of her passing so
young! First: MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! About me: I am pretty much 99.9% out of the rat race, so to speak. I have no contact with any musicians, conducting ones or otherwise. All the soloists I liked or admired
are dead as doornails. Same goes for singers and all though as human beings, I like Muti, Haitink and...no, I guess that's all. Oh, yes, and Levine. I like those three because they have been incredibly kind and friendly
to me and because, on the rare occasions we have spent time together, it was great fun and we didn't talk about music. Also, they are not treacherous at least not concerning myself. You can see where my priorities lie,
no? I wonder if you would care to tell me who the friend of yours in New York is who told you how to contact me. I am glad he/she did and if he/she is also a friend or ex-friend of mine, I might write him,/her. The kind
words you wrote about my work I thank you for warmly! I feel that you are enormously overrating me: but I refuse to squirm in the discomforting knowledge that I am really not much good. I will just enjoy it! Please take
care and enjoy like! With my best wishes and greetings, yours sincerely, Carlos Kleiber. P.S. This is absurd, I know: I am mourning for your mother" GREAT letter from the reclusive late conductor one of true GREATS of
