| MANUEL GARCIA 1775-1832 the great Spanish tenor star, composer, impresario and teacher was the founder, together with his wife soprano Maria-Joqaquina Garcia-Sitchez ,of a GREAT dynasty of singers. His children were Manuel Jr the important baritone & teacher and the legendary short lived Maria Malibran and long lived Pauline Viardot. Not bad! Here are some interesting souvenirs. | |

GARCIA, Josephine- ALS 4 pp to George Sand 23 Nov 1844 in which she goes into great length about Maurice Sand's visit to her daughter Pauline Viardot's house at Courtavenel and the
"petites imprudences" that may have taken place. In all a nice long gossipy letter to her friend Sand in which she passes on family news ie about the brood of singers , mentions Chopin and
is utterly natural and charming. The letter is signed J Ve Garcia (Joaquina widow of Garcia). This particular letter is mentioned in a letter of Chopin to Sand 2 Dec 1844 -Correspondence

GARCIA, Manuel- ENGAGEMENT contract for Theatre Royal Italien Opera Seria e Buffa issued by Angelica Catalani-Valabregue the 30 September 1816- as head of the theatre to Manuel
Garcia- Londre, Golden Square No.34 for his engagement as Primo tenore assoluto & semi seria from 7 October 1816-7 October 1817- the details of the benefit performance of his opera "The
Calif of Bagdad" are spelled out in the margin in great detail as well as the condition that M.Spontini is not the director and in the case that he is named the contract is void! Details
of payment to Garcia and Joaquina, engaged as seconda donna, are spelled out and approved by Manuel and Joaquina. The size is 8 x 13" and would display nice in a double faced frame.

VIARDOT, Pauline (nee Garcia)- ALS 3 pp from Garcia's long lived daughter one of the most influential people in European 19th musical life. She knew everybody and they all passed
through her salons in Baden Baden and Paris. She created works by Gounod-"Sapho", Meyerbeer- "Le Prophete", Massenet- "Marie Magdalene", Brahms- "Alto Rhapsody" and others as well as
creating many works in various local premieres eg. Il Trovatore in England, Fidelio in French, Les Troyens privately, Isolde with Wagner singing Tristan and Klindworth at the piano! In
this letter she sends the Galignani brothers proprietors of a retirement home in Neuilly her thanks for the printed notice and kind thoughts
