107. THOMAS, Theodore- SP Falk New York cabinet photo with musical quote from "Parsifal" on the verso s Cincinatti 1881. Thomas was the leading advocate for Wagner's works in the United States in his time, and in 1884 he took his orchestra on a "Wagner Tour" of the country, with concerts of unstaged excerpts of all the operas.. He hired the main singers from the Bayreuth premiere of Parsifal to be the soloists - Materna, Winkelmann and Emil Scaria, as well as Christine Nilsson who sang Elsa. The six Wagner concerts in Boston commenced on April 4, 1884, over four days at the Mechanics Institute. Several of the concerts attracted more than 8,000 people. The orchestra was augmented to 150 players and a choir of 600 was recruited locally to sing with the New York Liederkranz Chorus. Materna sang Isolde, Brunhilde, Ortrud and Kundry; Winkelmann Tanhauser, Siegfried, Walther, Tristan and Parsifal, and Scaria Wotan, Sachs, Pogner and Guenemanz. Entire acts were performed. 112. WAGNER, Wieland- SPc of Siegfried & Winifred's eldest son who together with brother Wolfgang revived the Festival in 1951. A brilliant stage director Wieland's long-lasting 1951 production of "Parsifal" included many features with which he later would be identified. Post-war austerity and his own interest - influenced by Adolphe Appia - in lighting effects led to the use of round minimalist sets lit from above. Wieland's minimalism extended beyond the stage furniture and props. The performer of Gunther, for example, was expected to sing leaning forward in Act 1 of Gotterdammerung until he felt his authority challenged by Hagen and sat up straight. It is hard to imagine a greater contrast with traditional operatic acting.
