147. HARTY, Sir Hamilton- SPc of the famed English conductor/composer/accom- panist. He started as the later accompanying Kreisler, McCormack, Szigeti & Agnes Nicholls whom he married and who arranged for Hans Richter to help launch a conducting career. Bt 1913 he was conducting "Tristan" and "Carmen" at Covent Garden but preferred symphonic work and he went from the Liverpool Orchestra to the Halle where he started by replacing Beecham in "The Messiah" & "Mass in B minor" He became the Halle's permanent conductor in 1920 till 1933 making it into a world class orchestra touring it thru the USA and Australia. He composed a number of orchestral tone poems that were successful eg "With the Wild geese" the conducting of which started his performing career.

160. NIKISCH, Arthur- SPc seated portrait photo of the Hungarian born conductor one of the giants of his time a champion of Tchaikowsky, Beethoven Liszt and Bruckner whose 7th Symphony he premiered. He was principal conductor of the Leipzig Opera then succeeded Reinecke as director of the Gewandhausorchester and was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic as well as at various time also being director of the Budapest Opera and Boston Symphony Orchestra and appearing often in London. He brought the LSO to the US which was a first He made the first recording of a symphony- Beethoven's 5th in 1913. He was considered one of the founders of modern conducting style – Stokowski, Boult, Toscanini all admired him and Reiner said...that "it was Nikisch who told me that I should never wave my arms conducting that I should use my eyes for cues". The signature is on the dark suit so contrast is medium.
