He also toured the west with Richter, Oistrakh & Rostropovich. In addition he gave the premiere of Shostakovich's 4th Symphony. He defected to the West in 1978 and became the Concertgebouw's permanent guest conductor till his death as well as a regular guest conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic. 179. SODERO, Cesare- SP 8 x 10" photo of the Neapolitan cellist/conductor who came to the US in 1906 age 20 and immediately conducted opera in Chicago and elsewhere. In 1914 he became the chief conductor at the Thomas A. Edison Recording Company with final say on what was recorded so he was able to make many of the most interesting instrumental records yet done and he accompanied all the great singers including Muzio in her legendary takes. When he left Edison in 1925 he went to radio first to NBC then to Mutual where he conducted hundreds of opera and symphony broadcasts. He led the Mendelssohn Glee Club from 1934-47 and debuted very successfully at the Met in 1942 in Aida and stayed till his death in 1947. UNCOMMON.
