119. RODZINSKI, Arturo- SP portrait of the Dalmatian born Polish conductor educated in Lwow and Vienna who got his start at the operas in Lwow and Warsaw coming to the US as assistant
conductor to Stokowski in Phildelphia 1925-1929 then going to Los Angeles till 1933 and finally to Cleveland in 1933-1943 when he transformed the orchestra to the WORLD CLASS ensemble
it has remained ever since. While in Cleveland he also conducted staged performance of operas including Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mzensk". He was head of the New York Philharmonic
1943-1947 which was the summit of his career. He and the orchestra were featured in the film "Carnegie Hall" and he was on the cover of Time Magazine. He was famed as an orchestra
builder and he put together the NBC Symphony Orchestra that Toscanini later led. His later years were spent recording and freelancing eg "Tristan und Isolde" in Firenze and Chicago.
Never healthy he died at 66 in 1966. The photo is opposite the bio Spanish language bio page in the Teatro Colon Buenos Aires program book for 16 Agosto 1950 concert. .................$175 |
