GIANNINI, Vittorio- AMusQS to the word "Primavera" ("Flaming springtime"). penned by the Philadelphia born composer trained in Milano and Juilliard where he later taught as well as at the Manhattan School and Curtis Institute and North Carolina School of the Arts. Prolific he is best remembered for his operas "The Scarlet Letter" created by his sister famed dramatic soprano Dusolina Giannini and "The Taming of the Shrew" both top notch works. His other sister Eufemia Gregory was a noted voice teacher at Curtis and taught Anna Moffo and Judith Blegen among others. Giannini's pupils include Flagello, Amram, Iannaccone, Corigiliano, Pasitieri among others. $200

17. IMBRIE, Andrew- AMusQS from ther American composer's "Violin Concerto Concerto III". A pupil of Boulanger and Sessions Imbrie taught composition at the University of California Berkley from 1949-1991 as well as elsewhere. His composition style was influenced by Bartok and Sessions – his music had melody and he avoided serial styles. $175	18. KLEBE, Gisheler- SP 4 x 6" color portrait of the important German composer who burst upon the scene with his "Die Zwischermachine" based on the Paul Klee painting performed by Hans Rosbaud in 1951. He was a Rufer, Blacher & Fortner pupil and succeeded the later at the North West German Academy of Music in Detmold where he taught with great success. Prolific in many forms his operas were particularly noteworthy- eg "Die Rauber", "Alkmene", "Jacobowsky und der Oberst" performed by the Hamburg Opera in their notable Lincoln Center season. Uncommon. $125	19. KORNGOLD, Erich Wolfgang- AMusQS. Marietta's lied "Gluck, das mir verblieb" from the Viennnese prodigy composer's masterpiece "Die Tote stadt" which premiered in 1920 when he was 23. His first 2 operas "Der Ring des Polykrates" and "Violanta" premiered in 1914 when he was 17 years old. Previous to that his ballet "Der Schneemann" was a tremendous hit at the Wiener Staatsoper when he was only 13 years old and his earlier "Piano Sonata No. 2 in E major"" was played all over Europe by Schnabel. He continued composing, conducting and teaching with great success in Austrai and Germany when Max Reinhardt invited him to come to Hollywood in 1934 to work together on the film of "A Midsummer's Night Dream" . He remained for several years and started his film composing career, but went back to Austria returning o Hollywood in 1938 to compose the score for "The Adventures of Robin Hood" which won him an Oscar. He composed many other great scores "The Sea Hawk". "The Private Lives of Elisabeth & Essex" & "Deception" among others. Despite his great success as a film composer he never accepted the fact that this "serious" music went out of favor. That has turned around and the Paris Opera joins the many other major theatres in presenting a new production of "Die Tote Stadt" this fall. The quote is in heavy pencil on the verso of an A. Mocsigay Hamburg 1912 postcard photo of the 15 year old Korngold. Somebody else has written the name of one of Marietta's greatest interpreters Lotte Lehmann at the top of the card. $1,375

MALIPIERO, Francesco- AMusQS from the Italian composer's "Sette Canzone" part II of his III part opera "L'Orfeide" d/s Parigi MCMXX (1920) on a 5 x 7" album leaf. Perhaps best remembered for his complete edition of Monteverdi's work Malipiero was a pupil of Bossi, assistant to the blind composer Smareglia and together with Casella and d'Annunzio created the Corporazione delle Nuove Musiche. He was in and then out with Mussolini and settled in Asolo in 1921 where he lived for the rest of his long life dying in 1973 age 91. He was one of the most prolific and influential Italian composers of the 20th century writing an astounding number of works in all forms. He taught and was head of the Venice Liceo Musicale from 1939- 1952 and Luigi Nono was his pupil. $750	22. MANCINELLI, Luigi- AMusQS from the important conductor/composer's opera "Ero e Leandro" with libretto by Boito. Starting like Toscanini as a cellist in several orchestras he soon became one of the busiest major conductors of opera on the International circuit. Paris, London, Madrid and above all Buenos Aires where he opened the new Teatro Colon in 1908 and the Met where he conducted the American premiere of "La Boheme" in 1900 "Ero e Leandro" was conducted by the composer at the Met in 1899 with Eames and Saleza and 1903 when this quote was penned in Boston with Gadski and de Marchi. $475
23. MANCINELLI, Luigi- poster 6.5 x 14" for the 2nd performance of "Ero e Leandro" 18 Febbraio 1904 at Teatro Costanzi Roma. $85	24. MILHAUD, Darius- AMusQS from the French composer's masterpiece "La Creation du Monde" a ballet in 6 scenes using jazz elements dating from 1922. A member of Les Six Milhaud composed with great ease and was a noted teacher including Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Burt Bachrach and Dave Brubeck!! He divided his time between teaching at Mills College and the Paris Concervatoire and was a much beloved figure. $675
26. PANNIZA, Ettore- SP 5 x 7" Carmen BA photo of the noted Argentine composer/conductor. He debuted in Rome 1897 & became Toscanini's assistant at La Scala and enjoyed a long brilliant career there, at Covent Garden, Met and of course the Teatro Colon. He was the first to conduct "Turandot" with Alfano's ending. He created many operas including Zandonai's "Francesca da Rimini", Wolf-Ferrari's "Sly" & Menotti's "The Island God" among many others. He wrote 4 operas of which "Aurora" & "Bisanzio" have enjoyed great success. d/s 1942. $150	27. 32. STILL, William Grant- AMusQS from the dean of African-American composer's AfroAmerican Symphony (1st movement) d/s June 2,1943. He studied with Chadwick and Varese. This work was premiered in 1931 under Howard Hanson and the Rochester Symphony Orchestra the first time an African American composer had such attention paid to his work. He later conducted the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra as well as other groups and his opera "Troubled Island" was premiered at the New York City Opera in 1949 another first for an opera by an African American composer! His work was was performed in London, Berlin, Tokyo and elsewhere Besides all this Still worked early on with W.C.
