19. KORNGOLD, Erich Wolfgang- AMusQS. Marietta's lied "Gluck, das mir verblieb" from the Viennnese prodigy composer's masterpiece "Die Tote stadt" which premiered in 1920 when he was 23. His first 2 operas "Der Ring des
Polykrates" and "Violanta" premiered in 1914 when he was 17 years old. Previous to that his ballet "Der Schneemann" was a tremendous hit at the Wiener Staatsoper when he was only 13 years old and his earlier "Piano Sonata No.
2 in E major"" was played all over Europe by Schnabel. He continued composing, conducting and teaching with great success in Austrai and Germany when Max Reinhardt invited him to come to Hollywood in 1934 to work together on
the film of "A Midsummer's Night Dream" . He remained for several years and started his film composing career, but went back to Austria returning o Hollywood in 1938 to compose the score for "The Adventures of Robin Hood" which
won him an Oscar. He composed many other great scores "The Sea Hawk". "The Private Lives of Elisabeth & Essex" & "Deception" among others. Despite his great success as a film composer he never accepted the fact that this "serious"
music went out of favor. That has turned around and the Paris Opera joins the many other major theatres in presenting a new production of "Die Tote Stadt" this fall. The quote is in heavy pencil on the verso of an A. Mocsigay

Monteverdi's work Malipiero was a pupil of Bossi, assistant to the blind composer Smareglia and together with Casella and d'Annunzio created the Corporazione delle Nuove Musiche. He was in and then out with Mussolini and
settled in Asolo in 1921 where he lived for the rest of his long life dying in 1973 age 91. He was one of the most prolific and influential Italian composers of the 20th century writing an astounding number of works in all
forms. He taught and was head of the Venice Liceo Musicale from 1939- 1952 and Luigi Nono was his pupil. $750 |
