5. BUSONI, Ferruccio- SPc of the Italian composer/pianist seated in a library signed 1918. A child prodigy he met Liszt, Rubinstein and Brahms toured
extensively started composing and taught in both Russia and the USA before moving to Berlin in 1894. He lived there except during WWI when he lived
in Italy & Switzerland. Among his piano & composition pupils were Petri, Grainger, Weill, von Zadora, Gruenberg, Mitropolous, Ganz, among others. He
arranged a lot of Bach's music for the piano and often used elements of other composers's music eg Liszt & Bizet etc. and wrote extremely difficult large
scale piano works eg Piano Concerto. Since after World War 2 his operas have become increasingly visible "Arlecchino", "Turandot" and especially "Dr

Orchestra stationery (he led this orchestra for it's first 4 years after 1929). Massachusetts born Hadley studied under Mandyczewski in Vienna & Thuille (at Richard Strauss's
suggestion) in Munich. He conducted his works abroad with great success. He conducted his opera "Cleopatra's Nights" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1920
where it ran for 2 seasons with great success. He led the Seattle Orchestra, built the San Francisco orchestra and from 1921-7 was associate conductor
of the New York Philharmonic conducting and selecting repertory. He also conducted the Buenos Aires Philharmonic sharing duties with Clemens Krauss. In
addition he founded the National Association for American Composers and Conductors in 1933 and was one of the founders of the Berkshire Music Festival at
Tanglewood. Very prolific as a composer he also was one of the first major American composers to compose and synchronize soundtrack music. .................$175 |

| 25. MERCADANTE, Saverio- signed address panel probably removed from a letter? addressed to Sig Vincernzo Flauto being hand delivered. This has been laid
down on a slightly larger paper alongside a cabinet photo of the very prolific and successful Italian opera composer first encouraged by Rossini himself!
He wrote "I Briganti" for Paris where it premiered with Grisi, Rubini, Tamburini & Lablache in 1836. In 1837 "Il Giuramento" one of his most successful
works premiered at Teatro alla Scala and it was this work which started the revival of interest about 40 years . The operas are exciting and dramatic
looking forward from the more old fashioned bel canto style. He wrote " I have continued the revolution I began in "Il Giuramento" "varied forms,
cabalettas banished, crescendos out, vocal lines simplified, fewer repeats, more originality in the cadences, proper regards paid to the drama,
orchestration rich but not so as to swamp the voices, no long solos in the ensembles (they only force the other parts to stand idle to the detriment

| 40. SOROZABAL, Pablo- SP 3.5 x 4.5" portrait of the Spanish composer who finished his training both in composition and conducting in Berlin. He wrote in
many forms but is best known for his 20+ zarzuelas starTing with "Katiuska" in 1931 and including "La del manojo de rosas" and " La Taberna del Puerto".
As a liberal he ran afoul of the Franco regime and had his share of problems. He also wrote film scores for dramatic films and conducted the Madrid

of "...40 Mountain Singers from the Pyrenées who are traveling for a charitable purpose..." Adding that their performance was supposed to be excellent,
not just according to the local papers, but according to a "music connoisseur" who provided Spohr with an elaborate report on the singers. Letter mounted
to the verso of the Berlin theater manageRS' letter with gold foil. The verso reveals an L.S. "Le Compte de Frederic[?]' 1p. 190x240 mm., Berlin, 25
Nov. 1840 in response to a letter of Spohr of 19 Nov. on the same subject writing, in French, that he "...was very much impressed with your suggestion,
to which I consent with pleasure that the opera should book the 40 Mountain Singers for a concert against the half of the gross receipts for the premier
show..." Letter similarly bordered in gold foil with elements of the General Intendatur's letterhead mounted to the top. Interesting. This is the 150th anniversary of Spohr's death. .................$450 |
