Where was I lacking with Piave? The agreement or rather the contract was made in which he promised to write me a libretto and I would pay him 300 francs. He was paid and still have the receipt. I didn't continue the opera that I had begun because I needed a lot of adjustments from poor Piave who unfortunately was struck with apoplexy. So now these changes that needed to be made have multiplied, since the tempos need at many points other forms not to mention certain political allusions that at one time would have been effective, now no-I'm alluding to the tenor's aria in prison..."
