35. WAGNER, Richard- ALS 3 pp in German "Berlin (crossed out) Bayreuth 27 Jan 1876 to "My dear good friend" FASCINATING text about upcoming performances of "Tristan und Isolde" in Berlin and
the problems with singers and past performances. "My good, dear friend! I thank you for your vote regarding Scalia. What he demanded, even the "prompt advance payment", would have been possible in the end. However,
what can we have in common with a person who places himself completely above the Association to which eventually I will be totally indebted for the success of my project? It was impossible to have his name listed as one
of us alongside my Berliners, who are above all praise. Therefore, I am dispensing with his participation. You are recommending Fricke to me. Now I want to raise the other point. If Fricke is so important, why
didn't you Ð and especially Niemann Ð strongly recommend him earlier on? This brings me to my concern about Tristan. So far only Eckert has kept me informed about this. However, I could never find out much about
it. My main question is the following: Will this really , seriously come to pass? In this case, if you believe in it, then Berlin's Tristan will become one of the most important and problematic tasks for me. This truly is not a laughing matter.
For 11 years, ever since the first performances in Munich, Tristan has become a lore. The performances in Weimar (with Vogl) have made this lore even less credible. My wife tells me they were terrible, which I can well
imagine. Janner told me that Niemann declared that he does not want to sing Tristan after they both heard a performance in Munich last summer, which I cannot hold against him after what happened. If under these
conditions Berlin should be under serious consideration, I feel very much involved.. Under no circumstances do I want this performance to become a curiosity only, but it should rather be an accomplished, first-class
performance. You and I Ð let us be frank: where does Niemann stand? I hear Ð actually from Eckert Ð that he should feel in particulary good voice. I believe this from the wonderful human being he is. However, how
about his intentions and positive attitude? Onward! Does Mark really present a serious problem for you because of the somewhat lower register? Do you feel unhappy about this? Or, have you been able to realize
the deep-seated, decisively important effort from my point-of-view and do you rejoice in having overcome this problem? I do not want to think that a change of mind was achieved by force and acquiescence. In this
negative scenario, do you think Fricke would be suitable (an impossible thought for me)? Even now do you still prefer Kurwenal ? Do tell me! Just nothing ambivilent nor against your better judgement lacking your
confidence... I am sure you understand me? In the beginning of March I will come to Berlin. If the "lay of the land" does not look positive, we had better not do it!! Fond regards, best friend! With sincere devotion I am
your Richard Wagner". Weak seams were taped in the past and the tape itself covers only the ends of some words at the right of page 1. Together with an unsigned photo of Wagner. .................$4,500 |
